Is the theory behind the cabriolet to mimic a hybrid with out a crown welded on? Doesn't the crown provide support for the face? I always thought that was the main reason for the crown, but now seeing these, and seeing the growth in composite materials in crowns (which can't possibly offer the kind of strength necessary to hold a face still through impact... (can it?) I'm beginning to wonder if this is a future avenue for driver or fairway wood designs...

That was the idea, remove the crown and see what happened. There is plenty of support on the sole and side walls that removing the crown didn't pose an issue. Now on a bigger club like a driver or fairway wood might be another issue when you have less material and that material is stretched to the max.
