When measureing someone for a set of irons and their 5 iron length is 38" do you cut the shaft at 38" for steel and 38.5" for graphite. I think i read some where graphite should be a half inch longer. If that is true would you also do that if the person measured 1" over standard or 1" short of standard. i just thought I would ask to see what the norm is for clubmakers. thank for the info ron

The real reason why graphite-shafted clubs, at least irons, are 1/2" longer than steel has to deal with creating a normal swingweight. That's it! It is not necessarily from a fitting standpoint. If someone is tested with various length clubs and a 38" steel-shafted 5-iron (or what ever length) is the best fit, it should also be the best fit with graphite. However, that club may or may not need additional weight added to create the proper balance.
