The real reason why graphite-shafted clubs, at least irons, are 1/2" longer than steel has to deal with creating a normal swingweight. That's it! It is not necessarily from a fitting standpoint. If someone is tested with various length clubs and a 38" steel-shafted 5-iron (or what ever length) is the best fit, it should also be the best fit with graphite. However, that club may or may not need additional weight added to create the proper balance.
