Jeff,
I recently purchased a set of Macgregor M685 forged irons that have Rifle Flighted Lite Shafts in Stiff 5.5 Flex installed in them. I love the feel of the irons and I hit them very well but I do not get any distance from them. For history I have a set of Acer 905 Pro's (7-PW) with TT GS75 shafts (stiff) in them. To complete the set, Acer Mantara Irons (4-6) with Apollo Spectre Lite (stiff) shafts round out the rest of my irons. I hit the PW 130 yards and it seems that the progression is about 10 yards more per club. The Macgregor clubs are about 10 yards shorter. I guess I should just stick to my Acer clubs but I have always wanted some name brand clubs I could hit well. The "feel" of the forged clubs is sweet but my ego wants the distance.
Do you know of others having problems with the Rifle shafts causing a loss of distance? The ball flight seems very high on the Mac M685's. Do you know of an iron shaft that gives good distance yet maintains good control? The True Temper GS75's a like very well and they have good distance and I hit them high as well but they are expensive. I got this short set as new pull outs and gave only what 1 shaft would cost with shipping.
I have looked on the internet in trying to find something out about the Rifles but came up empty and knew you were the guru of information.
Thanks,
Tim B

Tim:
I suspect part of the reason why the cavity back irons are longer than the blades could be the lofts as blades typically don't have the strong lofts. If you are looking for a shaft close in terms of weight and high launch to the GS75, but with lower price, look at the new Apollo Acculite 85.

I had the M685 with the Rifle Flighted 5.5. Rifle and Project X steel shafts almost always seem to be stiffer than normal to me. On the other hand, the GS75 are much softer than their rating. Suggest you just build a 5 and 6 iron with somewhere between R and firm flex in a couple of different shafts. Maybe the previous mentioned Apollo shaft and a Dynalite Gold SL R flex with an extra 1/2 inch more tip trimmed off. That worked fine for me. The M685 are .370 hosel. My distance was about normal with the M685. A too stiff shaft will sometimes be more accurate but less distance. But I frequently pull a too stiff shaft.
