Can anyone suggest a fast way to repaint the numbers in irons that have faded, and one that does not require me to buy any fancy stuff? thanks.

You might want to try some good nail polish. Okay, I know that sounds silly, but I have have seen some guys really "pimp out" their clubs this way. I have used model paint myself with pretty good results. Good Luck

You can also use an item called a Lacquer-Stik. Comes in 5 colors and costs $2.95 @. Available from a component company in Newark, OH. I've used this for the past 25 years and it works well. Very fast.

You might try applying vaseline to the area you do not want paint on and spray the number with an enamel paint.

I use X-finepoint opaque paint markers to restore numbers, score lines, etc..
The white works great to mark/restore the bottom two score lines on irons.
Kingpen is the name of the site: https://www.kingpen.net/ge_home.jsp
About $2.50 per.
