I built some prophet MGD's over the winter using UST Ironmaxx 75 proto shafts (S flex) and standard size grips. My old irons before had shaft like the apollo shadow and midsize grips and I hit my 7 iron around 160. Now I am only getting around 145-150 yards and the flight seems to balloon on me and I end up missing 10-15 yards left of my target line. I am not sure if the misses left are due to the much smaller grip size letting me roll my hands earlier or what my problem is. My driver, fairway wood, and hybrids all seem to have decent flight with a normal trajectory and fairly straight with an occasional slice or hook when I overswing.

These irons also feel pretty harsh compared to what I expected. I am contemplating reshafting with apollo stepless shafts, insert some sensicore plugs to damp them some, and use midsize grips. Does this sound OK? I was very confused since the MGD has a maraging face and using a graphite shaft, I expected to get a softer feel and definitely more distance. I need help!!! Sorry for the long post.

I don't think the undersized grip is causing the ball flight. It could very well be the overall weight and / or swingweight of the clubs with the graphite. A good test would be to pull one of the shafts and put in the Apollo Shadow and midsize grip to reduce the parameters down to club head design. The harshness may be due to the face material as it will have a different sound, which equates to feel.

I have the shadow steel in an xc 52* wedge with a midsize Winn grip, and I hit it straighter(still a little left at times), but still balloon more often than I would like. Can you recommend a lower launch shaft?

I really would like some forged irons, but that is not in the budget(and I am not skilled enough for blades!). I am trying to make the softest feeling clubs I can.

The Shadow shaft is designed to get the ball in the air, If you went to something like a Dynamic Gold, that would do the most to reduce trajectory. The Apollo Hump is another lower launching shaft that may have a little bit more feel.

If you want to softer face material in a reduced offset iron designed with game improvement features, you might look at the Acer XP905 Tour.

I looked at those irons before, but I was a bit leary due to the reviews stating the faces were cracking away from the frames. Is that an issue that was resolved? I don't really want to have to remove shafts and ship clubheads back if I can help it!

That was only an isolated incident with a handful of clubs that happened to have been ground/polished too much by the foundry. I don't think I have heard of any similar reports in well over a year.
