My friend recently took up golf. He does ok with hybrids and irons, but has a lot of trouble with the driver: topping the ball, drawing the ball (bad), and sometimes missing the ball. When you learn to ski, you start off on short skis and work your way up. Why not give a new golfer a driver with a shorter club? I realize there will be a loss of power, but the shorter shaft should make the club easier to control (e.g. this person has no problems with hybrids and irons).

If that makes sense to you how would he go about ordering a shorter driver from Hireko on-line? Since this club is something he would outgrow (he would want a less expensive driver) what would you suggest for the head and shaft? He is using senior flex clubs.

I wouldn't rule out using a shorter driver. Using one with screws like the Genesis so you could add weight for the shorter length and then removing weight if he ever decides to go back to a longer driver. But there may be more of an underlying reason why the lack of success with the driver. What shafts (model and flex) is he using in the irons and what does he have in the driver?
