What Driver/Shaft/Grip?

Hi Jeff,

While I am anxiously waiting on my two new Powerplay Q2 irons to arrive, I am already thinking about a driver. I'm 54 yrs of age. I got the SK Fiber Tour 80 graphite shafts on my new 9 and P wedge. Because, I have a kind of auto-immune condition where my joints can get tired and sore easily. So these shafts were chosen to reduce vibration, yet maintain some controlabilty with my irons...like I said I'll let you know. Also, got the Winn grips because my hands ached so bad after a week in Myrtle Beach.

Knowing this can you make a few recommendations on a driver/shaft/grip? I currently have a ten year old tour model that was oversized back then, but not now. The shaft is a graphite Aldila Low Torque. Driving has never been an issue with me. I seemed to have gone through periods of slicing, but that has improved, If anything now, I probably hit too left, like I do with my irons. But for the most part I hit them straight, but really have a tendancy to poop out on the back nine and will top about about 3-4 out of the back nine. think I get tired and start tying to swing too hard.

Whlle I would like to keep the Powerplay Q2 set in tact, and I like the looks of the Titanium Driver in the Powerplay Q2 set, I'd consider something different if you thought it would help my game. I also liked the Q2 driver because the yellow matches the Powerplay bag I am thinking about purchasing.

Appreciate your input! Tom M.

Tom:

The Q2 is a very good driver that I would have no qualms at all in recommending. If you hit the ball left, you can always switch the weights so it is not draw biased. Aldila no longer makes the Low Torque, but that shaft is essentially the VX. It all depends upon your preferences whether or not you want a lighter weight shaft and/or shorter assembly length than normal.

Jeff, based on my current attributes of my driver, and swing, and accuracy as reported, if I was to upgrade the shaft, one, would lighter (lower torgue maybe?)help my fatigue and still muffle excess vibration? And, two, even, if more expensive, of course I would want it all, like lightweight (unless it hinders me somehow), easy on the hands (what about a grip?), and still feel in control of the club?

Let me know if you can make additional recomendations on the shaft and grips based on the details, or considerations I included here.

Oh yes, what about loft degree 10, or 12? I ma currently using 10, never really seem to get a lot of loft though.

Thanks.

Ease on the hands, look carefully at the grip. The Winn grips may just do the trick, but I would wait and hit the irons first so you can decide.

Regarding the shaft, most shafts today are all much lighter than what you have and you shouldn't have the same problem with shock on a driver as you do irons since you have the assistance of the tee. But I would avoid the super ultra-lightweight shafts (below 60g) as the thinner walls won't dampen vibration as much as a heavier shaft unless it is offset with a softer tip section. If you like the Tour Trac 80's in the iron, you can look at the lighter SK Fiber Pure Energy.

Yes, I will wait in the irons definitily.

Sorry, I forgot to get your view on driver degree of loft. What about loft degree 10 or 12? I currently use 10.5, and I don't really mostly ever get the too high, so maybe 12 id better for me? Thanks.

Most golfers that think they hit it high, still don't hit it high enough. So if you aren't hitting the ball high now, definitely go to the 12 degree option!

Is the SK Fiber Tour Energy OK for fairway wood like PPQ2 3 and 5 as it is a driver? Thanks.

For many, the Pure Energy might be perhaps too light for control purposes unless they have a nice smooth swing. Many opt for the slightly heavier Tour Trac 80 as a companion for the fairways.
