If I use your shaft wizard it directs me to either an Acer X Class in S (stiff) or an Apollo Ballistic Graphite in an A (senior). Is there really that much difference in these two shafts that one goes from an S all the way to an A?

Not a dumb question at all. Shafts can vary greatly in the same flex from manufacturer to manufacturer or from product to product within the same manufacturer's line. The Acer X-Class is S-flex is not an over stiff S-flex shaft and probably at best a good "firm". the Balistik just happens to be one of the stiffer A-flex offering in graphite.

Does that mean an Acer X-Class in an A flex is a wet noodle?

Not really, the drop off in flex from one to the next is not as great as many other models. For a lot more information about shafts, shaft specifications and shaft fitting, please look at the following link: http://support.hirekogolf.com/customer-support/dynamic-shaft-fitting-addendum-download-free/.
You can look at the 2009 Shaft Fitting Addendum, Chapter 5 is you just want to look quickly at how the numbers unfold on the various shafts.
