Can scratches that penetrate the gloss finish of the shafts be ignored or should I be doing something to them? These scratches came about, I guess, from the shaft of one club hitting against another club's head.

The polyurethane is there to help protect the paint on the shaft, but over time can wear through rubbing against other objects in the bag. As long as you haven't gone through the paint to the bare shaft and into the fibers, there should be no concern.

If I may add my 2 cents worth on this subject, if you use plastic tubes to separate the clubs, this will rub the polyurethane finish and color coating off the shaft. I stopped selling plastic tubes about 25 years ago. BTW, they also wear the chrome finish off steel shafts.
