I have ordered a few standard stepped appollo shafts with different heads to try out. All but one is a R shaft and the other is A shaft. How can I tell the difference other that the band that was placed on the shaft. Side by side the step pattern looks the same.

This is the reason why the shaft labels do help to identify the flex by the clubmaker. There will be a small difference in the tip to first step lengths but it is fairly close and the bottom of the bore to ground line measurement of the iron could explain part of the difference. The other thing to do is measure the shaft diameter just below the grip. The A-flex will be smaller.

I have the A shafts to be delivered tommorrow. I ordered .600 grips the the shafts are .580 will the grips fit? I also weighed my XK 5 iron and it is 267 grams and the specs say 256.

The grips will fit, but to make them secure, add two more layers of masking tape underneath the double-sided tape.
What did you use to measure the weight? The reason for asking is I rarely see the irons over the spec weight and the few that are are only 2g over at most - not 10g!

I used a 500 gram digital scale. No big deal.

Actually it is a big deal if it is that far off. I ask what you were measuring with because I have had in the past customers weighing clubheads on a postal scale and those aren't accurate enough in the small tolerances that exist. If the head is that far off, then that will have an effect on the swingweight and flex and there would be no way to match that club.

I will start building my irons today with A shaft. Should the wedge be stiffer" If so I have 2 Apollo R shafts I could use.

That was the total weight of the club. I had it balanced across a small digital scale that weighs up to 500 grams and also grains.

I personally don't make my wedges any stiffer than the numbered irons. Often times the wedges are half or finesse shots so the extra flex from the higher swingweight is a help. Plus the shafts are shorter and the shaft trimmed more anyway that they are stiff.
