Avatar Inversion problem

I built an avatar inversion 9.1* driver earlier this year and shafted it with a Grafalloy Epic Tour shaft. The driver hit well until a few weeks ago when I discovered two separate problems.

First, there is a flaw in the weld along the back of the club and a small c-shaped void appeared. This seems purely cosmetic, so I am not too worried about this.

The second problem is it seems the internal weight has broke free of the glue holding it and is rattling around inside the head! It sounds like a big metal washer bouncing around in there when I pick it up. Is there a good way to fix this without reshafting? Grafalloy says not to pull the epic shaft or use heat or else the metal nanofuse material will be damaged. I don't hav a puller and really don't want to destroy a nice shaft due to a loose weight!

I have not heard that you shouldn't use heat to pull the Epic shaft. The rattle is most likely one of the internal weights that broke loose. If you didn't want to attempt to remove the shaft to send it back for credit or replacement or take it somewhere that is good about pulling shafts, there is one other solution. You could carefully drill a small hole in the sole and then stuff yarn until it solidifies the weight. Rattle stop will not work and expanding foam is too messy and would add too much weight.

Jeff Summitt

I could have sworn I read they said not to pull them, but you would probably know better than me! I do not have a shaft puller (all the shafts I have replaced were ones that were broken already!) and don't know of anyone around here with the proper equipment. I might be stuck!

Would the hireko people be able to pull it and stick it in another head for a fee if I sent the whole club?

Also, if the hole in the back of the club is big enough, could I inject shafting epoxy to glue the weight back down?

Grafalloy may have changed or added that based on what they saw in the field. We won't generally remove the shafts that the clubmaker built themselves, but we would if it was one off the clubs we assembled. Is there anyone in your area that you know who has a good reputation in club repair? You might ask the local pro because they may refer that work to that person or rely on them to alter their equipment. Some of the golfers with lower handicaps will usually know who does good work in their area too.

If there is a hole in the head, then I would not even attempt to do anything because it will only get worse and epoxy won't hold the piece in place.

Jeff Summitt

Re:Avatar Inversion problem

I finally made a shaft puller and got the head off tonight. Too busy on other projects, unfortunately. I emailed support to set up a return. I have another question about this head...

Is it a higher or lower spin head? I hit on a launch monitor today and my swing speed hovered around 115mph and ball speed around 155-165mph. Unfortunately, my backspin on the taylormade tour burner 9.5* driver was around 4800-5200rpm. Switching to a cobra s9-1 dropped it to around 3500ish. I figure I need a low spin head. Are there other ways to lower spin?

It is a relatively low spin driver since a lot of the weight was placed low and rearward within the head. But a lot of spin has to do with the loft. I would check the actual loft of the head and not the number engraved on the sole. Tee height and where you make impact on the face relative to the CG as well as how far forward or back in the stance and the angle attack all impact spin and launch conditions. The shaft and ball have some bearing as well.

Jeff Summitt
