Mantara = Gong Show

I mounted the new Mantara head I bought from Hireko this week on a Aldila TGw90 (X-flex) shaft and took it to the range yesterday.

The driver sets up nicely and the first ball off the tee was long and straight, albeit about 20 yds shorter than my DynaCraft DL Ti 360 driver.

But ....

At the point of impact the noise generated had EVERYONE on the line stopping and staring. Imagine an aluminum bat hitting a flagpole.

I hit it three or four more times just to verify it wasn't a fluke. By that time I was flinching like I was shooting a .44 magnum. My drives suffered from the flinch-factor too. This club will not make you popular at the range, nor in your foursome.

If you spray your drives into the rough, need a club that will land you in the fairway consistently, and enjoy attention, the Mantara may be your club.

Just be prepared to invest in some hearing protection now, or hearing aids in the future.

Update:

In the time since I originally posted the above review, I have taken the Mantara out for some rounds and become acclimated to the sound.

The Mantara is a keeper for tight fairways. Drives are average-long and consistently straight or slight draws.

I'm looking forward to trying the FWs and XL model. :)

I have never tried this, but a clubmaker I trust suggested drilling a small hole through the hosel into the head itself and threading in some standard knitting yarn to dampen the sound in a sumo squared driver, I would think it would work in this case as well

Re:Mantara = Gong Show

There is another option to drilling a hole. Modern drivers often have a stopper at the base of the hosel that can be lifted out to put the yarn thru. I haven't seen the Mantara so I don't know if this is the case here. It would also mean removing the shaft if the club were already assembled. The stopper should be replaced before shafting.

From the sound clips Hireko has posted, sounds like they have resolved the sound issue with the XL.

Hope the production model gets here in time for this season.

:D

What lengths did you make the clubs? The suggested lengths would be 43", 42" and 41" respectively.

Sincerely,

Jeff Summitt
