Looking for more consistency from your iron game? You need to seriously consider the Pinhawk SL single length irons! They are extremely popular for a reason. Contrary to a traditional set of irons, the SL's are all designed to be the same length throughout the entire set. In addition, the swingweight and flex are also the same. This allows the golfer to use the same swing, on the same plane, with the same feel, for each iron in the set. The loft gapping is slightly larger than traditional irons; this is to maintain a proper distance gap between clubs. The suggested men’s length for the Pinhawk SL's is 37", which is a typical 7 iron length. Note that Pinhawk is a trademarked line of golf clubs not designed by Hireko Golf.

Pinhawk SL Iron Assembly Instructions

These irons are assembled differently from all other irons we carry because the head weights stay the same throughout the set.  So you have only two key differences in assembly:

1.  Tip trim the shaft, regardless if the head is a #4, #9 or SW as if it were a #7-iron

2.  Cut the butt end to length as if were a 7-iron.  If someone orders a set +1/2”, then make that length ½” over your standard #7-iron length FOR ALL CLUBS IN THE SET.

The SL is short for SINGLE LENGTH.  When you get done, all clubs will be the exact same length with the only change being the loft.  This should make assembling these irons easier than normal.

ONE LENGTH. ONE SWING.

Product Questions

Are these irons forged? Do they have more of a "springlike face" in the longer irons such as the 4-6 iron? This has been tried before back in the 80's and their is a set of clubs that are out right now that have had a pretty response in facing the problem of proper gaps for the single length irons/ Their lie angle is similar and they are forged in the 8-SW while the 5-7 irons are of two metals and they have more of a "springlike face". I would be curious if anyone has tried these irons and with what results.
Question by: ROGER on Sep 20, 2016, 7:34 AM
Roger,

These are cast from 431 stainless steel. The proper distance gapping was accomplished in this set by the loft and no need for expensive materials in the face.

Do these clubs conform to USGA rules?
Question by: George on Sep 20, 2016, 4:23 AM
George,

Yes they do conform to the Rules of Golf.

Are there instructions on how to cut the shafts to the 37" length?
Question by: Paul on Sep 20, 2016, 9:02 AM
Paul,

Tip trim and make the length as they were all 7-irons.
Answer by: Richard Lin on Sep 21, 2016, 9:09 AM
the 8 iron thru loft wedge appear to be almost standard for regular clubs. how do you adjust for the longer shaft?
Question by: gerald on Sep 20, 2016, 8:17 AM
Gerald,

The head weight is lighter than a normal 8-wedge or the same weight as a 7-iron.
Answer by: Richard Lin on Sep 21, 2016, 8:09 AM
I have been playing these for over two years now and have an older set of these with the 5 degree gaps. Why the change to a more traditional 4 degrees at the wedge end? Also, have you updated the grooves yet? The original design has those crappy partial grooves instead of full face grooves. You could really improve their performance with better grooves, as I have to constantly touch up the grooves on my 8-PW. Also, I think if you made the 5-7 at 6 iron length, and 8-GW at 9 iron length (with appropriate headweighting) they would really be a great set. As is, I do like my Pinhawks but can see room for improvement after playing them for two years. Also, please forgive the crassness of this next question, but why twice as much as a comparable clubhead like the Acer XS pro? Demand seems high as you can't keep stock (wanting to buy another set but you don't have all the clubheads in stock)
Question by: PeteT on Apr 12, 2017, 9:17 AM
Pete,

The current Pinhawk SL models have the USGA conforming grooves. Since they are designed for single length, it would defeat the purpose of making them at two lengths. The reason why they are more expensive is they are a design that is not designed by Hireko Golf, but rather Value Golf who invested into tooling and whom we buy and resell them. We receive these on a continuous basis so we should be getting more at any time - most to fill back orders.

I recently built the 4, 8, 9, P, A, and L wedge Pinhawk SL irons. I am excited by their potential for accuracy and distance. However, I would like complete the set. When will you have the 5, 6, and 7 iron heads available? Thanks for your excellent work.
Question by: Monty Jones on Apr 16, 2017, 7:04 AM
Monty,

We don't have an exact date, but we get these in on a regular basis. You can contact customer service directly at 800-367-8912 and they may be able to give you a better date.

Can these irons still be bent by my local club maker, a friend inadvertently ordered a -2 instead of a +2.
Question by: Karloz on Mar 26, 2017, 10:16 PM
Katloz,

Yes as long as they are within +/- 2º of the stated specifications.

How do you tip trim for SL irons?
I am using an Apollo shaft APMCG-ISR.
I am short so I will be making my clubs 36 inches.
Logic tells me the standard trim chart does not apply.

The trim chart for this shaft in stiff flex is as follows:
Code
IH1

4i
1.5 in.

5i
2 in.

6i
2.5 in.

7i
3 in.

8i
3.5 in.

9i
4 in.

Wedges
4 in.
Question by: steve on Nov 18, 2016, 5:29 PM
Steve,

You will tip trim each head as if it were a 7-iron. Making the clubs 1" shorter than normal will make the swingweight light (@ C5). As a result they will be stiffer without adding additional weight via lead tape or weighting down the shaft. If you don't adjust for the swingweight, then you may want to take 1" less (2" total) for each head in the set.
Answer by: Richard Lin on Nov 19, 2016, 5:11 PM
would tip trimming the 4 iron as if it were a 6 iron instead of a 7 iron improve the low launch that i hear complaints about?
Question by: Lou on Jan 7, 2017, 3:32 PM
Lou,

At most, that difference is only 1/2" which may make the shaft 2-3 cpm less. This difference will likely not yield a noticeable difference in ball flight.

    Love Them
The single length concept is an idea I have wanted to try for 30 years. With an old set of 80g graphite shafts found in a corner and some late winter boredom, I ordered a full set, 4i-SW. I'm 68 with a 4.8 handicap hitting a 7i about 153 carry.
As with Jake(above) I found the weights varied a bit, but for my set it was only 3.5g, easily corrected with tip weight during assembly. I assembled all clubs at 37" using 77g total trimmed shaft weight including up to 5g tip weights which resulted in a no grip SW of E2. (D2 with GP Tour Wrap Mid)
    Hosel depth = 1.15"
I absolutely love them! They play and look fantastic and have worn well with use and I love the single setup concept. 7iron is right on the money for length with a higher flight, but trajectory and shot shape are easily controlled. The shorter the iron the higher the flight compared to my MP30's, and the same in reverse for the long irons, lower (not low) traj with about the same distance but much easier to make a good strike.
I have struggled with one thing... chipping and short pitching with the SW. Just can't adapt to the longer shaft and when you choke down the light head losses all feel. After a solid month of trying I finally went back to my normal 52 & 58 wedge combo and took the SW out.
These are my every day clubs now and I'm not going back!
    (For what it's worth, Last 4 rounds = 76, 74, 74. 73)

    Good Not Great
I was disappointed in the weights. 7 Iron weighed 269, PW weighed 276, Gap wedge 269, 8 iron 272. In contrast every one of my Cobra King Forged One Length heads weighed between 269 and 271. I understand 'you get what you pay for' and there's some truth to that but it really makes the building part difficult when you have tolerances that are 7 grams apart. I'm yet to check the lofts and lie but at least those can be easily adjusted. Beyond that, they look very nice and I imagine my player will like the performance. Good option for the budget minded but just know you'll likely need a roll of lead tape and some drill bits if you want to get it right.
