How much do I cut off a tip on a standard steel shaft for installation?

I would recommend tip trimming as if it were a wedge due to the head weight.

Is this head made of SS or zinc? I can't tell & wanted to know prior to attempting any bending; great product, btw! Great tool to put in the bag.
